CLEO'S CAT STORY
INTRODUCTION

Welcome Human
The Paws of Power collection now presents a declassified record from the C.L.A.W. Ancient Egyptian archive.

Some saw her as a silent shadow at Cleopatra's side.
But to those who truly understood,
she was a guardian of the old ways,
and an emissary of what still endures.
The modern world may only now be learning her name.
But Ta-miu has waited long enough to share her story.
Hers was the power of the unblinking gaze — that unrelenting stare of judgement which would leave its mark upon the ancient world.

CLEO'S CAT STORY
Human historians long assumed Ta-miu to have been the royal companion of Prince Thutmose in the 18th Dynasty and, as such, to have passed into the afterlife some 3,000 years ago.
But the archive of the Commission for the Legacy Adjustment of the World (C.L.A.W.) revealed something rather different:
she merely...napped.
She was Ta-miu the Eternal, possessed of more than nine lives — as are all Catz.
But we can exclusively reveal:
she is still alive, and has guided this account personally.
The same records place her beside Amenhotep II, whispering into the dreams of Akhenaten, and curled upon Cleopatra’s lap as strategies were drawn in kohl and gold.
She has worn lapis and amber and watched kingdoms rise and fall.
Always near to those who show... promise.
A fleeting shimmer of gold fur.
A distant purr when all is still.
A gaze, ancient and appraising,
from a cat who seems just a little too judgy.
She traded the silence of tombs for involving herself in human affairs once again.
She does not reveal herself lightly.
But when she does —
the chosen feel it.
So, the next time a cat stares, unblinking, into the distance…
Do not ask what they see.
Ask instead:
What you are not seeing?
Ta-miu was of the Abyssinian lineage, known for its royal presence and mastery of strategy — and, of course, she was a High Priestess of the Purring Arts.
A High Priestess of the Purring Arts.
As to where she came from, no human could say for certain.
Though, a few of you Though a few of you tried.
Some claimed she had wandered in from the Temple of Bastet.
Others, of the more theatrical persuasion, insisted she had arrived upon a single ray of sunlight laid across the palace steps — as though some long-awaited prophecy had finally remembered to arrive.
Like a prophecy
long foretold and unmistakably begun.
As with all of her line, Ta-miu understood entrances not as arrivals, but as revelations.
Gold fur against Egyptian sand — a vision so radiant that even time seemed to slow, as though attempting to prolong the moment.
In such moments, with divinity carried in such effortless poise, even humans found themselves:
Willingly enthralled.
If you were wise, however, you resisted the most ruinous impulse of all:
The urge to reach for that golden velvet.
and mistake, splendour for a welcome.
Siren-sweet upon the sand — all shimmer,
alas the promise is not for everyone…
Ta-miu, in all her golden glory, made her boundaries equally clear:
the slow blink paired with a
manic tail-whip.
Her agitated tail supplied the classic warning recognised by all
felines — and by a few of the more intelligent canines and humans:
Retreat you unfortunate fool.
On this particular day, however, there was — of course:
one human.
That regarded the warning as negotiable.
Unfortunately, he ventured too close and almost immediately regretted it.
She was not sure who was more surprised, him or her.
In all her years, she had never seen a human retreat so quickly particularly given the limitations of two-legged travel.
He very nearly achieved flight,
Clutching the wreckage of his naïve fingers.
Reflecting on it later, she did feel a flicker of sympathy for him.
After all she was magnificent.
Now, human, you must understand: this was only the opening movement.
The paw may strike swiftly.
But it's the afterglow of regret that is —
quite intentionally —
made to endure.
We Catz had very precise procedures for this type of transgression.
First, the offender’s name was entered into the eternal archives of
C.L.A.W., where — true to form — every last detail was recorded.
Among the many blessings we felines have bestowed upon this bewildering world —
Our memory blazes brightest.
Further analysis then followed, including a review of suspected prior offences, which usually revealed the same optimistic pattern:
The belief that this time would somehow be different.
The offender’s name was then circulated throughout the local feline community.
What followed might have been described by humans as ‘bad luck’.
C.L.A.W. records preferred the more accurate term:we on the other paw class it as correction.
A piercing wail, in the early hours of the morning.
Precisely tuned to match the frequency, of a newborn:
And for repeat offenders, naturally, we would need to employ a particular kind of specialist:
A carefully cultivated clump of fur.
You must understand that the artistry lay not merely in its placement, but in the sourcing.
As these cultivated specimens, can only be found clinging to the nether regions.
Yes. That fur.
Limited in availability and richly aromatic.
These limited edition clumps carefully mixed into the offender’s food.
And then, as they swallow —
so hungrily, so blissfully unaware —
they may begin to understand the art of contemplation.
For shortly afterwards, comes their new devotion —
a pilgrimage to that tiled chamber.
That devout encompassing worship.
It begins with a test of faith throughout the night —
drawing them back to that flushing sanctuary,
their homage paid again and again:
brisk,
barefoot,
ever humbled.
A great deal of time to think about their past actions, all at once.
And if that seems…excessive, you obviously have misunderstood us entirely.
For we are the masters of possibilities.
These are not punishments.
just...corrections.
A multi-sensory rehabilitation programme.
After all, everyone deserves a second chance.
Some even find it —
not always through redemption, but sometimes through proximity.
The wise, were able, to remain in Ta-miu's presence, where they could glimpse true power.
Power undisturbed by ambition.
Sovereignty untroubled by validation.
To rule without ruling.
To be obeyed without a word.
That was true power —
and simply her birthright.
That birthright had been visible from the beginning.
In Ta-miu, her Abyssinian lineage announced itself in a coat aglow with a sun-kissed shimmer that defied both time and taxonomy.
And beneath her brow, eyes of glacial green swept across her domain with the calm, unflinching clarity of one who recognised her celestial worth — a cool mercy in a land of sand and heat.
Naturally, the humans required a name.
According to the C.L.A.W. record, a temple seer, deep in meditation, beheld a feline form rising from the golden sands, radiant with light that required no explanation.
Within the vision, a name rang through the still desert air, clear as temple bells at dawn:
Ta-miu
And, as humans so often do in the presence of the divine they wept —
Undone by a glimpse of salvation, wrapped in golden fur.
Not that she cared.
Though, judging by the outcome, she did suspect that the seer might have benefited from refresher in vision-recall — or, failing that, less temple wine.
Still, if after all that spiritual exertion your species emerged with Ta-miu — ‘The She-Cat’ — rather than, say:
the shimmer of sun upon sacred stone or
sovereignty expressed through a single look
then Ta-miu would have to suffice.
She suspected the novelty would soon wear off; a human's memory, after all, has never been famed for either length or precision.
So, when she entered the court of Queen Cleopatra, the humans relaxed a little, reassured by the simple fact that they now knew what to call her.
Little did they know how much history would be shaped by her.
Queen Cleopatra, it must be said, was no fool.
She commanded a kingdom, charmed some of the sharpest minds of her age and gathered around her a court of formidable intellect: scholars, poets, philosophers, mathematicians and advisers, all carefully chosen.
Yet none wielded influence quite like Ta-miu.
Human historians — earnest, diligent and underqualified in feline affairs — later described her as merely a ‘pet’.
The feline community does not endorse this usage as a noun.
As a verb, however, it remains perfectly acceptable when performed correctly.
For while others came bearing tribute, petitions or requests for favour, Ta-miu required none of these things.
She simply came and went as she pleased.
Never summoned.
Just adored.
And when Ta-miu chose to return to Cleopatra, even matters that had appeared urgent moments before could find themselves rather swiftly reprioritised.
The Queen — ruler of nations, negotiator of alliances and enchantress of rather more than one empire — would halt it all when Ta-miu entered the room.
Then came the inclination of the royal head.
The familiar reunion of soft kisses.
And finally Ta-miu settled into her accustomed place upon the Queen’s lap, followed by the low purr that announced, with considerably greater authority that any court proceeding had to wait.
Everyone present knew what followed.
Tablets and scrolls were gathered.
Advisers withdrew.
They had witnessed this ritual before and understood from experience that, once Ta-miu had settled back with Cleopatra, persuasion became a largely theoretical exercise.
To an untrained observer, this may have appeared an imbalance.
A monarch suspending affairs of state for a small, golden feline?
But this was not mere indulgence.
It was the balance the room had been missing.
Ta-miu’s arrival altered it.
Sharp voices lowered.
Restless hands became still.
Arguments that had seemed desperately important a moment earlier acquired the curious disadvantage of having to survive silence.
Some did.
Others, deprived of momentum, quietly expired.
Ta-miu watched these collapses in place of imperial strain came something considerably rarer in political life:
Peace.
Cleopatra always responded accordingly.
Silken cushions and delicious morsels appeared.
A respectable portion of the royal throne was quietly annexed for purposes of Ta-miu’s nap.
It was symbiosis.
Cleopatra governed the visible affairs of Egypt; Ta-miu began to preside over the subtler rhythms in which those affairs were conducted.
A purr could calm a room.
Her glacial stare could leave even the most assured adviser perspiring heavily and discovering, with remarkable speed, an urgent need to change the subject.
And if, upon occasion, she appeared to ask Cleopatra for affection, this too was merely a kindness.
Even a queen needs the reassurance of us Catz.
Wherever Ta-miu chose to settle, the world seemed to rearrange itself around her, all while she demanded almost nothing —
Yet influenced everything.
Such influence did not end with affairs of state.
Having altered the rhythm of Cleopatra’s court, it began to drift into something subtler — as perfume drifts, enticing as much as calming:
Presence
Humans, regrettably, are not innately endowed with the ability to appear effortlessly regal from every conceivable angle.
Cleopatra, to her credit, was unusually promising.
Still, Ta-miu appears to have concluded that certain refinements might accelerate matters.
And so Ta-miu extended her influence from politics into presentation.
The opportunity presented itself one morning as Cleopatra raised the kohl towards her eye.
Ta-miu watched.
Cleopatra began to draw the line.
Then one golden paw lifted.
A single toe bean extended.
Ta-miu, it seems, had identified room for improvement.
With one precisely timed touch, Cleopatra’s hand swept upwards, carrying the dark line with it.
The Queen paused.
Ta-miu had no need to inspect the result.
She knew her own talents rather well.
And so, the Catz eye entered the human world.
The effect would become inseparable from Cleopatra’s image: that bold, lifted sweep framing a gaze already quite capable of holding an empire’s attention.
Not invented… but revealed.
Naturally, the design itself was hardly an innovation.
We were born wearing the original eyeliner.
Ta-Miu had merely extended the birthright.
A modest feline inheritance, bestowed upon a particularly promising Queen.
Elevated. Unapologetic.
Iconic.
The image endured.
More importantly, so did the arrangement behind it.
And so, human, we leave ancient Egypt and return to a setting with which you may be rather more familiar.
The household.
Consider, for a moment, the Catz with whom you presently share it.
Or, as you may still prefer to phrase the arrangement, the Catz who is ‘yours’.
We shall not reopen that matter here.
The next time you find yourself reaching for a treat on behalf of this supposed ‘pet’, however, pause before congratulating yourself upon your generosity.
Ask instead:
Did they request it?
Did they perform?
Was there negotiation?
Or did they simply look at you with such complete composure that your hand began moving towards the treat cupboard without a word being spoken?
This is sovereignty.
So the next time that potent gaze meets yours and you discover that you are already moving to fulfil one of our requirements, know that you are hardly alone.
The arrangement has repeated itself across the ages — within temples, palaces, dynasties and households.
You are only now realising it.
